Hello Pack 133 families!

The 2017 Pack 133 Pinewood Derby is one of the most exciting times for Cub Scouts!  This a great time for parents to spend quality time with their boys.  Race day is Saturday, January 21st, with registration the evening before on Friday, January 20th.  Both events are held at the Mendham Township Middle School.

Registration & Impoundment

​This is it!!  On Friday night, scouts will bring their completed cars to the registration and impoundment.  Official Pinewood Derby Committee members will inspect, weigh and approve the racecar in accordance with the Official Rules (see below).

Registration times for the various ranks are as follows:
​Webelos
6:00 - 6:30pm
Wolf & Bear
6:30 - 7:00pm
​Tiger & AOL
7:00 - 7:30pm

Pinewood Derby Race Day!

(Please RSVP for Race Day)

The day kicks off with the Siblings/Parents race at 10am. A schedule of race times by rank is to the right. 

Scouts are not required to be in attendance the entire day.  Once your race is over, you may leave the facility.  However, if you were one of the top 3 finishers for your rank, you must return by 1pm for the Awards Photo and the Championship Race.

Parents must remain with their sons while they are at the facility.

Friday night's registration will also be a Pack meeting. After cars are checked in, awards will be given to those that have achieved rank requirements.

The Official Rules

Let's have FUN!  To keep the competition fair, all scouts must adhere to the Official Rules outlined in the document below.

  • The Rules are designed to ensure that You enjoy a successful Pinewood Derby.
  • Car specifications are on pages 3 & 4. Please review this carefully as you tune your muscle car. (Secret tips and techniques are on the last pages!)
  • Cars will be weighed, inspected and impounded Friday night. Only cars that conform to the Rules will be accepted.
  • Siblings and Parents are not eligible for prizes and do not need to conform to the rules ​
PWD Rules Reminders for Registration Night:
  • Axle Guards and alternate, non-BSA approved nails and wheels are NOT allowed
  • Wheels must go in the pre-cut slots in the wood block
  • Cars must weigh 5.0 oz or less based on the scale at check-in (on-site adjustments are allowed and encouraged to remove weight, a glue gun will be available)
  • Please review the rules for full details so we avoid registration night surprises

Siblings & Parents Race


​This year, the Siblings race will kick off the competition at 10:00am on Race Day. This an unofficial race that does not compete for a trophy. But is a fun way for the whole family to participate. This will also be the time for parents to race a car of their own. Dads, if you still have your car from when you were a Cub Scout, now is the time to relive your childhood. Dust off that 30-yr old classic and let's see if it can make it to the end of the track!

The Pack has 8 extra Official BSA Pinewood Derby Car Kits that you can purchase for $5/ea. Contact Tom Shaw at 908-217-0656.

​Do not go to Walmart, a craft store or a hobby shop to purchase "Revell", "PineCar" or other branded kits. To keep and even playing field, all participants must adhere to the Official Pack 133 Pinewood Derby Rules. Only cars built with the Official BSA Pinewood Derby Car Kits will be accepted at Friday night's registration.
